In the suburb of Devonport on the North Shore, lies North Head, a volcanic headland
overlooking the Waitemata Harbour. This headland was first occupied by Maori who
named it Maungauika, after Uika, an ancestor. It was later taken over by the New Zealand
Military who built coastal fortifications during the Russian scare in 1900 and occupied the
summit area until 1996.
